International Joint Venture Stability in Emerging Markets

چکیده

We investigate the determinants of international joint venture (IJV) stability and mortality in emerging markets. We propose that IJV stability is reduced with changes in the external regulatory regime, but can be enhanced by certain internal organizational conditions. These conditions include complementarity in resource contributions of partners, a correspondence between these contributions and control exercised over the IJV, symmetrical learning objectives and ability of partners, as well as trust between partners. Using a survey of IJVs in India formed between 1984 and 1996, we confirm these propositions and discuss implications for the literature
